On World Aids Day, December 1, an event aimed at educating local young people on the prevention of HIV/Aids and the awareness of the need to practice safe sex was held at the BP Chiang Mai City Hotel.

The event was attended by 150 young people, and presided over by the Chiang Mai deputy mayor, Soonthorn Yarmsiri. Activities included a demonstration of the correct way to use a condom, and information designed to counter a general lack of awareness of the transmission patterns of the disease.

A report by Chiang Mai’s Public Health office states that there are currently 30,488 sufferers from HIV/Aids in the province, 2,085 of whom are between the ages of 15 and 24. Total deaths to date from the disease number 12,420.

Studies have shown that a lack of awareness of the disease amongst younger people coupled with a reduction in the age at which sexual activity begins has resulted in an increase in infections.

12월 1일 세계에이즈 날을 맞아 치앙마이 BP호텔에서HIV/Aids행사가 열렸다. 이번 행사에서는 청소년을 대상으로 HIV/Aids 예방 교육과 안전한 성관계를 위해 성에 대한 인지의 필요성을 알렸다.

이번 행사에는 150명의 젊은 청소년들이 참여했으며, 치앙마이 부시장 Soonthorn Yarmsiri가  담당했다.  활동 내용으로는 올바른 콘돔사용법 설명과 성인지력이 부족해서  전염되는 질병 유형에 대한 정보를 제공했다.

치앙마이 보건소에서 발표한 자료에 의하면 현재 치앙마이 내에서 30,488명이 에이즈로 고통을 겪고 있다. 그 중 2,085명은 15살에서 24살 사이이며,  지금까지 12,420의 사람들이 이런 병으로 죽었다.

조사결과에 따르면, 청소년들 중 나이가 어릴수록 질병에 대한 인식이 부족하고 성 관계에
서 전염병이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
